Australian summers can be brutal, and a warm lunchbox isn't appetising. Here's how to pack fresh, cool, and safe lunches that survive the heat and keep kids energised.
The Summer Lunchbox Challenge
Australian summer school terms (Terms 1 and 4) bring unique challenges. With temperatures regularly hitting 30°C+ in cities like Sydney, Brisbane, and Perth, lunchboxes can reach dangerous temperatures if not packed correctly.
The food safety danger zone is 5°C–60°C — bacteria multiply rapidly in this range.

Keeping Lunches Cold
1. Freeze drink bottles: A frozen water bottle doubles as an ice pack.
2. Double ice bricks: On very hot days, use two ice bricks.
3. Pre-chill the lunchbox: Keep the whole lunchbox in the fridge overnight.
4. Choose insulated bags: Woolworths and Coles sell affordable insulated lunch bags.
